SKA comes to Peckham

If you were one of the thousands of newly arrived Jamaicans in the 1950’s then finding work would have been one of your major challenges. Added to this was discrimination and racial tensions which made the experience of these new arrivals very unpleasant.

It was in this environment that the Jamaican soundmen; Duke Vin and Count Suckle arrived in the UK. They both stowed away on a boat from Kingston and brought with them a sound that was sweeping across the small Caribbean Island and would later change the face of music in the UK. This was the sound of UK.

Free Movie Duke Vin & The Birth of Ska. Thursday 27th October 7.30pm@ Peckham Plex Cinema 95 Rye Lane London SE15 4ST. Booking is essential

Nearest Train station: Peckham (British Rail)
