Book Sale

Thousands of books for sale .Five for a £1 paperbacks and hardbacks mostly £1 or £2.

The sale is in aid of the charity for the homeless, Crisis, and the New Cross People’s Library, a community venture that has taken on running one of the libraries closed by the local authority.

Date: Saturday 28th January  2012

Time: 2pm to 5pm.

FUNDING

    The Tesco Charity Trust Community Awards Scheme provides funding that will offer practical benefits, such as equipment and resources for projects directly benefiting children and young people ( including children with disabilities) living in local communities.  Grant: £400-£5000.
    Starbucks Youth Action provides grants to help young people aged 16-24 run community change projects in their local area in greater London.     Starbucks aims to  encourage and inspire a generation of young people to take action and create positive local change. Grant: £2,000 Deadline: 5 Mar 2012.

TRAINING

PVSF will be running a 1 day Project Evaluation Framework Workshop on Sat, 28 Jan 2012 (10am – 4pm),  so if you would like to learn how:

  • Demonstrate impact – how your project will benefit your participants
  • Show progression of beneficiaries – what your participants will go onto after your project.
  • Evidence track record – how past work has shaped your new project.
  • Convince funders why they should fund you in the future.
  • Produce an evaluation that reflects your achievements.

Race and Beauty Research

Ileto Caribbean Peoples Network is currently conducting a community based research into the use of skin lightening products by the African and Caribbean born African community.

If you are  living in the Boroughs of Lambeth, Southwark or Lewisham you might be willing to assist with the research project if;

  •  you or any one you know use skin lightening cosmetics/products?
  •  you have a view on the practice?
  • any of these questions apply would you be willing to fill in a questionnaire?

Research findings will be advocated to local, regional and national stakeholders for improved policies and services.

Black Caribbean Parents Needed For Focus Group

Black Caribbean parents with primary school aged children are invited to take part in a focus group to discuss parental support and raising children’s education attainemnt levels.

The discussion is part of an independent research being carried out by parents who are concerned with the underachievement of Black Caribbean children attending Southwark Primary schools

Each participant will receive a £10 WH Smith voucher as appreciation for attending the focus group and contributions to the discussion.

Nominate Volunteers for the Team London Achievement Awards

Boris Johnson is calling on Londoners to nominate their top volunteers for the first annual Team London Achievement Awards by 1 February 2012.  The awards will celebrate the positive effect volunteering can have in our communities and recognise the unsung heroes who give up their time to help others. London-based individual volunteers, teams or volunteering organisations can be nominated, and efforts must benefit London or Londoners.

Team London will give out four awards under each of the following categories:

  • Improving Community Safety
  • Increasing Youth Opportunities
  • Building Stronger Neighbourhoods
  • Cleaning & Greening London

The Team London Achievement Awards will be managed in partnership with Greater London Volunteering (GLV) and the deadline for all nominations is the 1st February 2012. Winners will be announced at a prestigious awards ceremony on the 1st March 2012.

Are you a  Black and Minority Ethnic family with individuals in full-time low paid, or part-time paid work and in receipt of working tax credit and would like to illustrate what a cut to this benfit support would mean to your family?

If you have lots to say about the government cuts and how it could affect you why not take part in a 10 minute film (not for TV) which is part of a research project.
